The control of discharges of any origin into river basins is an environmental problem for any municipality with industrial areas, especially those close to urban centers. Current EU directives are increasingly strict regarding the monitoring and control that must be carried out on the quality of discharged water.

To address this issue, SCS has innovated with a technological solution that allows municipal and river water managers to control these types of discharges, enabling traceability back to their source.

This solution consists of the following main components:

  • Portable autonomous measurement equipment:

    • DATALOGGER iLOGS with internal battery.
    • Power supply battery pack.
    • Associated sensors: pH, temperature, conductivity, VOCs, open to others.
    • Main unit: polypropylene case.
  • Sample collection pump.

  • DATALOGGER configuration software.

  • Data monitoring software.

The measurement equipment collects data from sensors every 10 minutes, stores it, and sends it to the server every hour via the DATALOGGER.

The system continuously screens the water surface. When a discharge exceeds a preset limit, the pump is automatically activated to collect a 1-liter sample, and an SMS alarm is sent to designated mobile phones.

Notable features

  • Mobile equipment designed for quick deployment between different measurement points in a municipality. The case can be easily placed to start monitoring desired parameters.

  • Built-in sample pump saves space in the chamber.
  • Robustness against adverse physical and environmental conditions: first physical protection of the case is shockproof, connector protection, no exposure to the elements, flexible cables, and corrosion and flood protection with an IP68 enclosure.

  • Easy maintenance: Easy access to discharge control equipment (ECV) allows for simple maintenance without the need to enter the collector, avoiding work in confined spaces.

  • The 1-liter sample allows for a general screening of the discharge and determines if laboratory analysis is necessary (important for industrial discharge control).

  • The equipment installed in overflows measures the water surface passing through the collector at the overflow windows or gates. Therefore, during heavy rain events, measurements are taken at the PVDSS (overflow discharge point in the sanitation system).

*Following the guidelines of R.D 665/2023, of July 18, which modifies the Regulation of the Hydraulic Public Domain, Article 259, point 8.2, Quality Control System, it is recommended to replace Level and VOC sensors with turbidity and Radar sensors.

The optimal servitization of pollutant discharge control, both into river basins and municipal sanitation networks, requires implementing an operational plan:

  • Planning strategic control points.

  • Monitoring and control of water quality parameters.

  • Management of measurement points.

  • Traceability of industrial pollutant discharges.

  • Initial sample screening. Subsequent laboratory analysis if necessary.

  • System maintenance: sensors, measurement equipment, sampling.
